Obra das Mães is a non-profit charitable organization with a long history and distinctive merit in Macao. The name of the organization comes from the Portuguese phrase “Mother’s Work”. In 1940, the Obra das Mães built the first center in Lisbon. The organization expanded in Portugal and opened more than five health care centers in a decade. Obra das Mães of Macau was founded in 1965. The founders of this organization are the wife of António Adriano Faria Lopes dos Santos who is the Governor of Portuguese Macao, the Macanese, and Chinese communities. All of the founders are from the upper class in that period of time, but with different nationalities and religious beliefs. All members followed the spirit of the mother’s love to help mothers and defend the rights and interests of women in Macao, as well as to contribute activities related to various areas of charity and social welfare.
In 1970, Obra das Mães set up the "Creches São João" for Children caring as the first nursery located in the Avenida de Horta e Costa. Until 2017, Obra das Mães already established four nurseries to help children from poor families. Obra das Mães not only concerns about the healthy growth of children but also cares for the elderly. The organization set up three nursing homes for old people and provided caring services.
The building located in the Avenida da República is full of luxury constructions of Macao. Although the architect of Obra das Mães cannot be identified, it is easy to indicate that this building is modern architecture and also a representative of the transitional building influenced by the neo-classical style.
After interviewing local people who live in the surrounding area, most people expressed that there is no strong emotional connection between Obra das Mães and the local community. What’s more, they don’t have a deep understanding of this building. Since this building is still in use as headquarter of Obra das Mães and has high architectural value, this building should be maintained as the original status in the future.
“Butterfly Method” Analysis:
The emotional part is evidently smaller than the rational part of the butterfly method. The first reason for this situation is that Obra das Mães which located in the Avenida da República is the headquarter of the organization. There is a little event happened here. What’s more, this charitable organization is held by people from the upper class. The public doesn’t have a clear understanding of this building. However, this building is representative of the transitional building with the classical architectural model. Furthermore, this building is in good condition and maintained regularly. All these reasons can explain why the emotional part is smaller, but the rational part is bigger.
