In order to satisfy local residents’ living standards and future development, Red Market was established in 1936. The original name of the Red Market was Admiral Market since it’s located at Agenda do Almirante Lacerda. It was built in 1934 as a postmodern building designed by Portuguese Julio Alberti Bosto, designed by B. de Sena Fernandes for structural computation, and painted by Wong Lam and Tse Shing; therefore, the building also has an artistic value as a historic building. It has artistic value because it is architectural Art Deco style. The red market building has three floors and is made of red brick. The plan is symmetric on two axes, with a tower in the middle and four additionally at each of the four corners. In order to enhance the strength of the building and extend the vertical perspective of the building, the structural columns are extended from the walls to decorate the structural components. Because the tower in the middle and the towers in the four corners have no practical use, they are considered to be modernist architecture, but due to the emphasis on decoration, they are considered to be art deco architecture. The red market building features four large open windows and a central staircase, providing good ventilation and lighting. Today, it is the only listed market building in the immovable cultural heritage list in Macao, and one of the markets still in use. In the eyes of many Macanese, the red street market is a very special market with many memories and feelings. The standing streets bear witness to the lives of generations of Macanese. For example, families go to the market to buy vegetables during the holidays or go to the nearby iron house to buy eggs and tahini. These seemingly small daily events are deeply imprinted in the hearts of Macao people. Maybe it is no longer a market, but a memory that belongs to Macao people.
“Butterfly Method” Analysis:
Red Market is not only a place full of childhood memories for each local resident, it is also one of the most famous landmarks in the area. At first, it was a vegetable market established to facilitate and satisfy the residents' daily life and future development. Gradually, its existence promoted the interaction among local fishermen, and it even evolved into the ritual activities of today's "drunken dragon festival". Therefore, the Red Market has special meanings for them.
