D. José Da Costa Nunes Kindergarten

D. José da Costa Nunes Kindergarten (hereafter referred to as “the kindergarten”) was named after "D. José da Costa Nunes[1]", and this person was the bishop of High Joseph who promoted Macao’s education. The kindergarten is a private educational institution, under the management of APIM[2]. The kindergarten building resembles a neo-classical style, but the geometrical parapet walls, simplified design doors and windows, and central bull-shaped gate design (restored segments and new wing) give the building a modern feel and a touch of decorative art. It is, therefore, a great example showing the transformation of architectural style at that time.

The kindergarten is located next to Guia Hill, aligned with Avenida Horta e Costa, on a famous site where it was once located the Flora Mansion - the residence of Macao governors in the late 19th century. The current building was designed and reconstructed by Ar. Luíz Xavier Miranda in 1933, following a depurated Art Deco architectural language, with a symmetrical plan, high ceilings, and abundant natural light. In 1940, the kindergarten was renamed to the current name and the building façade was altered into the current state since 1956. In 1997, the kindergarten was renovated and connected to the new wing with a project by Ar. Mário Duque.

This building has served the Macanese community for more than 70 years as an educational institution which transmitted the Portuguese language and culture. Also, it is a social center, every year Macanese society celebrates lots of festivals here. D. José Da Costa Nunes Kindergarten has a strong connection with the local community. As the only Portuguese kindergarten left in Macao, it has been carrying on the responsibility of transmitting Portuguese nurturing culture and heritage for decades.

[1] Jose da Costa Nunes (1880-1976), Azorean of Candelaria do Pico, was one of the most distinguished Portuguese who traveled and worked in the East and Far East.

“Butterfly Method” Analysis:

D. José Da Costa Nunes Kindergarten does not have a profound historical connotation, but it has provided the Macanese community a lot of beautiful memories. It not only promotes the transmission of Portuguese nurturing culture and heritage, but also enhance the communication between Macanese community and even Chinese community. Here, the “Micareme” transformed from a traditional Portuguese custom is gradually becoming a new tradition of Macanese community, to whom the kindergarten is significantly important.
